It took me a long time to finish this one。 The premise of the book - and the rather heavy handed title - sent me into overprotective overdrive of my favourite fictional characters in this series。 That compulsion was well-founded, in my opinion。 From a writer who never shies away from action-packed, high octane, hectic scenes, Mr Butcher just stepped it up a notch。 I'm glad I eventually read through the entire book。 Things did not turn out as badly as I thought they might。 But, man, was it a hect It took me a long time to finish this one。 The premise of the book - and the rather heavy handed title - sent me into overprotective overdrive of my favourite fictional characters in this series。 That compulsion was well-founded, in my opinion。 From a writer who never shies away from action-packed, high octane, hectic scenes, Mr Butcher just stepped it up a notch。 I'm glad I eventually read through the entire book。 Things did not turn out as badly as I thought they might。 But, man, was it a hectic ride。 Excellent for all of that。 I can't wait for the next book to be published! 。。。more

Read peace talks and then went straight into battle ground。 Disappointed that the two books are over twoish days but big consistancy gaps between the books。 Big relationship issues with Carlos and McCoy at the end of the last book are just forgotten and glossed over in this one。 Smaller items like saying he was never in the BFS castle before in person but was in short stories。 I know it may be a lot to ask an author but I really dislike those kinds of inconsistencies。Also the cold thing? Wow - what a book! What an emotional roller coaster! Butcher has really gone above and beyond with his Dresden series in this one。 And the short story at the back is excellent as well - very sweet。 The only bad thing about this book is that there isn't a new one published yet so I have to find something else to read。 I look forward eagerly to Butcher's next Dresden novel。 Wow - what a book! First things first – whatever you do, don’t pick this one up if you haven’t already at least read Peace Talks and preferably Skin Game before that。 All three books run straight on from one another, with no recap or handy reminders about what happened before。 So if you just happen to pick up this one on the grounds that you recall Harry with fondness from some of the earlier books, put it back on the shelf until you’ve read the other two。Book titles generally relate to the contents in some way, a First things first – whatever you do, don’t pick this one up if you haven’t already at least read Peace Talks and preferably Skin Game before that。 All three books run straight on from one another, with no recap or handy reminders about what happened before。 So if you just happen to pick up this one on the grounds that you recall Harry with fondness from some of the earlier books, put it back on the shelf until you’ve read the other two。Book titles generally relate to the contents in some way, although that can often be metaphorical, or slightly oblique。 But in this case, Butcher has been literal as the whole book revolves around a single major battle in the middle of Harry’s home turf, Chicago。 The earlier chapters cover the battle preparations, with Harry desperately trying to prepare for the worst – and the second half of the book, which isn’t short, covering that battle。 I’ve read one other book that covered a single battle in a similar fashion – Last Dragon Standing by Rachel Aaron and overall, I think that one is more successful than Battle Ground。Butcher is hampered by Battle Ground being narrated in limited first-person viewpoint, which means that Harry has to be in the middle of whatever action is going down。 While we have the advantage of seeing everything through the filter of his laconic, dryly amusing characterisation, it also means that every encounter has his trademark fighting style, along with whoever is accompanying him。 And although he has a number of different companions battling beside him throughout the night, inevitably a pattern develops。 That said, almost anyone who has featured throughout the series puts in an appearance during this vital encounter。 I was particularly delighted to see dear old Butters acquitting himself with such distinction as he’s a huge favourite of mine。 There are major losses, too。 A key character dies during one of the opening skirmishes – and I was more than a bit rocked to see them go。 It rocked poor old Harry, too。Having a full-on battle throughout the book also means there isn’t an opportunity for the reader to get a breather。 I frequently put the book down simply because I needed a break from the bloody action and emotional intensity that came with it。 And during the latter stages, I became a bit numbed by it all, so that I ended up rereading the ending just to get a more accurate sense of the emotional tenor around the ending。That said, I don’t want you to go away with the impression that this is a poor book。 The action scenes are gripping and immersive。 Butcher portrays Harry’s experiences during the battle with vividness and emotion that packs a punch。 And I’m fascinated to discover exactly how he’ll take the series forward from here。 It was a calculated risk to split the original book in two, which I think Butcher has mostly pulled off。 Recommended for fans of the Harry Dresden series who have at least read the previous two books。 The ebook arc copy of Battle Ground was provided by the publisher through Netgalley in return for an honest opinion of the book。8/10 。。。more

Hooboy, that was intense! After the slightly slower 'Peace Talks', Battle Ground is something else。 Calling it a roller coaster would only work if you imagined being on that roller coaster while being chased by a T-Rex。 Ridden by monkeys。 Enchanted monkeys slinging magic poo at you。 While juggling three washing machines。Pacing is non-existent, this one's at eleven all the way through。 That does make it a bit of an exhausting read, but I have to say Butcher does a fine job making sure each chapte Hooboy, that was intense! just ok, I was kinda mad at how slow the end was, but granted it's Jim Butcher, and he even told us he likes his readers to suffer more than the characters。 I'm doing this with little to no spoilers (As possible) for those who give 2 stars, READ FROM THE BEGINNING! A few things about the Dresden files:1。 They will always make me laugh。2。 I am always just a tad, slightly confused。3。 There is always a ton going on。This book was no exception。 This series has been a mainstay in my reading for many years now and I have to say I didn't necessarily love this instalment and I can also say there were times when I wanted to stop listening to it, DNF if you will as I did NOT AT ALL like where the story was going。 There was too much of one thing happening that is not A few things about the Dresden files:1。 They will always make me laugh。2。 I am always just a tad, slightly confused。3。 There is always a ton going on。This book was no exception。 This series has been a mainstay in my reading for many years now and I have to say I didn't necessarily love this instalment and I can also say there were times when I wanted to stop listening to it, DNF if you will as I did NOT AT ALL like where the story was going。 There was too much of one thing happening that is not necessarily my thing but I did finish and I enjoyed the short story at the end。I will be interested to see where this story goes from here。 。。。more

This book was definitely better than Peace Talks, without question in my opinion。 And the two books definitely should have just been one large book。 But in all honestly, one book or two books this story still works out very well for me。 Lots of action。 The most action ever in a Dresden Files book。 It works for the pace as it's the fastest paced in the series。 Lots of emotion and payoff as well。 And more promises for the future。 I'm excited and anxious to be fully and finally caught up on this se This book was definitely better than Peace Talks, without question in my opinion。 And the two books definitely should have just been one large book。 But in all honestly, one book or two books this story still works out very well for me。 Lots of action。 The most action ever in a Dresden Files book。 It works for the pace as it's the fastest paced in the series。 Lots of emotion and payoff as well。 And more promises for the future。 I'm excited and anxious to be fully and finally caught up on this series and I can't wait for more to come eventually。 4。5/5 stars。 。。。more

HOLY F…ing hell。 I feel like I just got hit by a Mack truck。 This was a big, big book of the Dresden files and you will not be ready for it。 There is an epic amount of action through the story and the emotions are pulled at big time。 I don’t know why Butcher did some of these things but now I need answers!

After finishing this book, I felt that that the previous book and this book could have been combined into one story since it practically continues。 Also, I felt like some of the characters were just fodder and not respective of their positions, based on how they were dealth with。 Also, why did one of my favorite character have to end。 It was very unexpected and I feel like there needs to be a better explanation after 17 books。 Trying not to leave any spoilers。 Although, some characters have had After finishing this book, I felt that that the previous book and this book could have been combined into one story since it practically continues。 Also, I felt like some of the characters were just fodder and not respective of their positions, based on how they were dealth with。 Also, why did one of my favorite character have to end。 It was very unexpected and I feel like there needs to be a better explanation after 17 books。 Trying not to leave any spoilers。 Although, some characters have had more growth, which I see in this book and its great for them。 I'm expecting the next book to do better cause I had more questions at the end。 。。。more

As always a good readThis like the other Dresden books was a fun read。 Maybe a little long on the fight for Chicago but that is just me。 I would recommend this to everyone that likes a good home town hero in the fantasy world :-)。

Fast Paced Ride of Action4 stars because I love Dresden and I'll definitely read it again in the future。Literally a giant battle of a book, this one。 I kinda got tired out of all the action and started skimming - then went back and read it again to make sure I wasn't missing anything important。 But who am I kidding? I always miss something important。The world is always turning and surprises always like to smack me in the face, some of them heart wrenching, some of them terrifying, and some of th Fast Paced Ride of Action4 stars because I love Dresden and I'll definitely read it again in the future。Literally a giant battle of a book, this one。 I kinda got tired out of all the action and started skimming - then went back and read it again to make sure I wasn't missing anything important。 But who am I kidding? A SIMPLE MAN'S REVIEW:For a book that is 90% fighting, it's sort of boring。Don't get me wrong, there are exciting parts sprinkled throughout the story, but too much of it feels like an episode of This is Your Life, with all the characters of past books coming forward to fight with or against the cause。 A super-fan might enjoy it, but to me, it was cheesy。 And let's talk about Dresden。 He has changed over the years, as one would expect, but he's just too whiny to be enjoyable these days。 He has h A SIMPLE MAN'S REVIEW:For a book that is 90% fighting, it's sort of boring。Don't get me wrong, there are exciting parts sprinkled throughout the story, but too much of it feels like an episode of This is Your Life, with all the characters of past books coming forward to fight with or against the cause。 A super-fan might enjoy it, but to me, it was cheesy。 And let's talk about Dresden。 He has changed over the years, as one would expect, but he's just too whiny to be enjoyable these days。 He has his moments of the past character we all love, but then he quickly switches to lamenting all the things he's done wrong or couldn't change。 Uggh。 Was this supposed to be the last Dresden book? I had hoped it was - sort of a grand finale for the series - and with all the deaths of beloved characters, I thought it just might be。 But then the ending took a decidedly "what's coming next" sort of turn and I had to roll my eyes。 Let it end!Honestly, if you're not up-to-date on the series, just stop now。 But if you read the last book, you deserve a little bit of closure, so。。。Read it! 。。。more

This was a very heavy book。 It seems like every now and then, Butcher drops one of these that resets the board and changed everything。 It took me a long time to finish this but once I did, I immediately wanted to go back and start over。 Part of it was just relentless and I wish there had been some respite。 That said, it is a necessary and very good book。
